Professor El-Sharkawy was born on July 3,1941 in Garbia, Egypt. He was married with 3 children. He did all of the studies in Mechanical power Engineering at Alexandria University in Egypt, he got a B.Sc., in 1963, M.Sc. in 1969, and Ph.D. in 1973.
His professional career started in 1963 with work as a Mechanical Engineer for the “Behera Company for Land Reclamation in Alexandria” In 1967, he moved to NRC and appointed as a Researcher in 1973. In 1975, he went to the USA for a three-year term as a Visiting Assistant professor at Virginia polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia During this period, he was involved in two research projects sponsored by NASA Langley Research Centre on Jet Engine Noise and Propulsion.
Since 1983 Professor El-Sharkawy held the position of Research professor of Mechanical Engineering at NRC, and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department since 1985. He held the position of Head of Engineering Research Division, NRC (1985 – 1987) Appointed as the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Research Centers and Institutes, since 1993.
He was a member of the Egyptian Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Egyptian Society of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Editor of Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Has more than 60 technical papers in journals and contributed to more than 35 International Scientific Conferences. He organized and chaired the Cairo International Conference on Renewable Energy in June 1988. Attended meetings sponsored by United Nations as expert in renewable energy.
Professor El-Sharkawy was awarded the NRC prize in engineering sciences, 1991, and has received biographical recognition in Who’s Who in South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, International Book of Honor, and has been recorded at the International Roll of Honor.
